AMD announced the Radeon VII at CES, but is this something you should even be excited about? The launch seems a bit weird and untimely to me. Let’s break down the info and figure out where Navi fits into all of this.

Unfortunately, my glasses gave up the spirit and were laid to rest on January 15th. New frames and lenses are inbound! For now, stare at my naked face.
Cant wait for the AIB versions, but maybe i'll pull the trigger on an RTX 2070 or a Vega 56 or just wait for navi and the RX 3070.
twice the hbm and hbm bandwidth is a bigger deal than the core clock speed increase! no time soon the 60CU radeon VII will have a vram issue in 4k or vr with that 16gbs!
Ray tracing is not like you people are making it out to be. Ray tracing in just over hyped.
Could be wrong here, but not sure where people get Vega and Vega 2 from. Vega 64/65 = Vega 10, Vega 7 = Vega 20. Perhaps I'm missing something. Yes it's 2nd gen Vega, but AMD have never called any of the Vega parts (server, workstation, discrete, professional, notebook/mobile, etc) by generation number.
im still fucking using a gtx480 gotta love how its at 80-90C at all times and works as a room heater
they shoud wait for ray tracing till its finalized instead of rushed
I wish I could buy one of these, but I bought a RoG Strix Vega 64 about 6-7 months ago for $590. It crushes all my games on ultra settings at 100+ fps on my 1080p ultrawide monitor (LG 34uc79g-b).
i would like to see a price per frame video comparing the gtx 1060 up and the amd rx 570 up what one would be a better value.
Maybe they are following suite with NVidia. Use Vega II/Radeon 7 to set the pricing tone for Navi.
The pain is that those that do actually buy the 20xx series cards, creates the sensation that everyone can afford $600 + cards. Even with all the loaded BS, I know a number of people who have bought them despite telling me tales of 'not that stellar' performance for the price point.
Navi would be great in the budget high performance space. But it feels like Vega II/Radeon 7 is a stop gap.
It just doesn't make any sense to run a development for so long and then to undercut your time and effort. Vega II/Radeon 7 could be one of the offspring of this development, and if its pricing is anything to go by.. Well… I think you see where I am going with this.
Will it compete? Dunno, and not going to guess at it. Sure hope it does.
But as long as they can stay just under NV pricing, they might know they have a cash cow to ride into oblivion, the capital of which could drive other projects, sure, but we would need some stability in the market now, especially if there is to be a reasonable future.
My 2 cents.
VII is greek numerals for 7 V is 5 and II is 2
I really doubt that adoredtv's rx 3080 leak is still relevant considering the price of the radeon 7. If the r7 were 20-30% faster than the vega 64 for $699, why would amd cannibalise their top of the line gpu with a navi card that is reportedly 15% faster than a vega 64, for $250, a hundred dollars less than half of what the radeon 7 is going for?
Dude did u go Gillette?
I only trust my tech news to smart guys that wear glasses. It's like RGB for intelligence.
Here's hoping reviewers that are lucky enough to get their hands on the card learned their lesson with Vega 56/64.
These aren't NGreedia offerings and you don't just throw power and clocks at them.
To get real performance we've learned that yes you throw some power mainly just swiping right on the power slider but then undervolt and instead of overclocking the core, overclock the memory…
Aah now I understand amd' plan, make their competitor think their full of crap with the rumours going on, ye competitors relax then hit them with the market shaking products
AMD said they would work with their partners and vendors to reduce the price of Vega right after launch and nothing happened. I don't trust anything AMD says what I trust is their actions and what they say about AMD. Like "we want gamers to get our cards" and then they provide an update which improved mining.
I hope the Radeon 7 is awesome and there are enough to around, but I'll believe it when I see it.
With regards to AMD's video card offerings, I don't think I will ever switch from Nvidia to AMD/Radeon . I also said that about Intel vs AMD CPU's but the Ryzen 2 (or whatever it's called?) is looking attractive especially if the performance to price charts we've seen holds even close to accurate. If the Ryzen 2 and the motherboard offerings stack up vs the Intel i7-9900k and motherboard offerings I could see myself switching for a higher end combo of Ryzen 2 and motherboard before jumping from the 8700k to the 9900k and say a higher end Asus Maximus XI later this year.
HEY! LISTEN!
Once again, would everyone get off the OMG the 2060 costs 100 USD more than the 1060!! Performance wise it is punchingt 2-3 cards above its class and is 100 and 200 USD cheaper than those cards (1070ti and 1080) were when they launched.
I think this card will sell well, the reason being is a lot of people right now think Nvidia is ripping them off with RTX.
It will be a harder sell for the average consumer yes even im looking at rtx2080 (i just want balls the wall performance and i've seen a gsync monitor i like) reviewers will probably buy them if they aren't able to borrow one for a review and there is plenty reviewers out there now all running the same few benchmarks like bfv and ghost recon wildlands ac oddysey gta5 etc, i've even come across spanish review channels, russian ones etc without even looking for them like there is so many tech reviewers at least if they dont sell to the average person who runs it in their home every day pc they have them others to sell it to for showing fps in games right?..
I'm interested in VII, but not excited. I have a Vega 64, which is good, but my main monitor is a 3440×1440 and just a little more on some games than it is comfortable with at a good frame rate (usually running in upper 1500s at 1050mV). A 20-30% improvement might be all I need to be happy. If reviews look good, I will be considering it, but not going to be rushing to pre-order. I like to go red team when they have a reasonably competitive product, but have owned plenty of green team as well. I care nothing about ray tracing, but DLSS is interesting.
Thanks allot for reduced hand waving 🙂 very good analysis ! Waiting for second gen vr anyway before buying any new graphics card.
Have a feeling that AMD is just trying to do "it just works" with "it's 7nm". At least this break through proves that they have ability to use "smaller transistors" with their product. FYI: at least 7nm works, and I don't see rAy TrAcing "it just works" without prove.
I'd like to see Navi undercut all the RTX cards, offering the same performance for less money, sans the ray tracing, people should be keen on that.
Clearly it's just a place holder and to finalize whatever they need to on navi, I'll be waiting for the vega 56 refresh and see how that goes.
Actually its even more clever, cuz february is second month (vega TWO) and 7 cus 7 nm 🙂
AMD sucks ass
Why do people talk like this puts AMD GPUs on the map in the high end? It will barely compete with the RTX 2080, but the Vega 64 barely competed with the GTX 1080. Radeon 7 still consumes far more power. It is not new; it is the same thing over again, just not several years late. But, I think the small number being produced easily outweighs being late.
im very interested in this card. however i am waiting on some real world bench marking to be done.
This year is still dead for GPUs. All what we get is nVidia scam with hardware raytracing which is infinitely stupid.
AMD does not have enough resources to launch Navi yet. But it will happen very soon
